They went looking for privacy, and yet the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were indispensable from the spotlight last year. From the aftermath of their Netflix documentary to, of course, the highly anticipated memoir Spare – Harry and Meghan have been busy. And that didn’t do her any harm!

Now that 2023 is finally behind us, we see endless lists passing by. Who was the busiest royal? Which perfume sold best? Which designers made the most impression?
Of course, a list of best-selling books has also been published. Of course we expected that Spare, the duke’s memoirs, would find a nice place here. But guess what? The candid book full of personal outpourings and criticism of The Firm has even managed to reach the top position – well behind number two on the list.
Bestseller
For example, The Daily Mail has drawn up a list of figures regarding book sales over the past year via the bookseller platform The Bookseller. Spare takes the lead here, with a total number of sales of 706,978!
The number two, cozy crime book The Last Devil to Die by comedian, presenter, and editorial favorite Richard Osman does not even come close to the high with ‘only’ 529,532 books sold. By the way, Osman has nothing to complain about, because three of his other books have also secured places in the top ten. This means he has sold a whopping 1,434,932 books in total. Well, boss above boss, Harry!
Revelations
We all know by now that Spare caused quite a stir. For example, Harry revealed that Prince William once confronted him in a heated argument, and that the two brothers were originally strongly opposed to a marriage between their father, King Charles, and his queen Camilla.
Harry also depicted his father’s new wife as a true ‘evil stepmother’ as only occurs in fairy tales. He wrote: “Shortly after our private conversations with her, she set in motion her long-term plans – a campaign aimed at marriage, and ultimately, the crown.”
Although tentative steps have been taken in recent months to repair the soured relationship between the Sussexes and Windsors, it remains to be seen whether things will ever completely work out between both sides of the family. If all his other projects fail ingloriously, Harry (and his ghostwriter) can apparently earn some nice money by writing a sequel to Spare!
