What is kombucha and what are its benefits?

Have you ever heard of kombucha? A drink that is increasingly found in supermarkets and trendy cafes. But what exactly is kombucha and what makes it so popular? Read on and find out the benefits this drink has to offer.

What is kombucha?

A fermented tea that originally comes from the Far East. It has been drunk there for centuries because of its health benefits. It is a refreshing drink that is naturally sparkling and above all a healthier alternative to sugary soft drinks. Low in calories and sugar and packed with flavor. That’s what you want, right?

The drink is made from black or green tea in combination with sugar and/or fruit juice. Finally, ‘SCOBY’ is added, which is a special kombucha fungus. This is a symbolic culture of bacteria and yeast and together they form a fine tissue. It’s actually a kind of organism in itself. It produces all kinds of substances such as carbon dioxide, but also needs nutrition. This food is in the form of sugar. The kombucha fungus ‘eats’ the added sugars, so to speak, so that it can grow. Of the amount of sugar added in the beginning, very little remains in the end.

The benefits of kombucha

1. Improved digestion

Kombucha contains probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that can support digestion and promote intestinal health. Drinking these types of drinks regularly can help reduce digestive issues such as bloating.

2. Strengthened immune system

Kombucha contains all kinds of vitamins such as vitamin C, B vitamins and vitamin K. The probiotics can stimulate the immune system, making the body better able to fight infections and diseases. Ultimately, this can lead to fewer cold symptoms and a general increased sense of well-being.

3. Detoxifying effect

Healthy eating remains important so that your body does not have to process too many toxins. But due to polluted air and the use of pesticides, we come into contact with toxins. Kombucha contains antioxidants that can help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. Regularly consuming antioxidant-rich foods can detoxify your body and maintain healthy skin.

4. Improved energy

The combination of caffeine from the tea and natural sugars from the fermentation processes can give you a mild energy boost. These are not accompanied by sharp peaks and valleys.

5. Improving mental health

The vitamin B1, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 contained in the tea are very important to prevent depression. For example, the presence of vitamin C reduces cortisol. But thanks to the effect on the intestines, your mental health can also be improved. It is not without reason that your intestines are your ‘second brain’.
