With the right eye shadow you can make your eyes shine even more.
Getting older is absolutely no disgrace: as far as we are concerned, gray hair and a wrinkle here and there are actually very elegant. At the same time, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a well-groomed make-up look to look a bit younger. But then you want to choose the right colors of course!
Look Younger with Eyeshadow
Eye shadow can help you accentuate your most beautiful facial features. Especially when you match it to your eye shape, skin color and age. Yes, even the latter! When you are over 40, there is a big chance that your eyelids and skin texture will go through changes. And this is where you can best adapt your make-up.
But which types of eyeshadow are best to use? Several beauty experts share their tips with She Finds. Not only do they indicate which eyeshadow colors are the most unflattering when you want to look younger, they also share a number of variations that work perfectly for all ages.
Metallic red
According to makeup artist Kerry Jackson, there is one eyeshadow color you should avoid if you want to look younger or fresher: metallic red. “Red eyeshadow can make you look years older. It makes your eyes look tired, irritated, and generally unfit,” she explains.
Metallic eyeshadow is all the rage these days, but according to Jackson, that’s not necessarily good news for the over-40s. “As a makeup artist, I try to avoid metallic eyeshadow on older skin as much as possible, because shimmers and metallics are brutal on textured, wrinkled skin.” Red eyeshadow with a metallic finish? Not an ideal combination, then. Noted!

Crimson red
In general, Jackson advises against going for a bright crimson red on your eyes. “Red is a really tricky color to get right because it’s so easily associated with the color of blood,” she explains. “What happens when we cry, have an allergic reaction, rub our eyes? Our skin and eyes turn red.” She says that red eyeshadow can unintentionally make you look like you’re suffering from allergies or something else unpleasant. “It’s not an attractive, flattering look.”

Shiny and transparent
One final eye shadow to avoid if you want to look younger? A sheer, sparkly one. These shadows contain light-reflecting particles or ingredients, which can end up “accentuating every wrinkle or line on your face that you’d rather hide,” says Jackson. She says it actually makes the lines on your eyelids look more pronounced and dramatic than they actually are. And we don’t want that, of course.

The right colors
So which eyeshadow should you go for? Well, a neutral version with a satin finish, for example. This eyeshadow has a subtle finish, which is neither completely matte nor completely shiny. The satin finish gives a hydrated and smooth look, which is perfect for women over 40. “And if you really want a shiny finish? Then choose a cream-based eyeshadow that you can easily blend,” Jackson concludes. “This is much more flexible on your skin than a powdery shimmer.” Good to know!
