What’s it all about? Queen Margrethe (83) has been sitting on the Danish throne for 52 years – making her the longest-reigning monarch in Europe since the death of Queen Elizabeth II (✝96). At the turn of the year, Margrethe surprisingly announced that she would be stepping down from her role as acting head of state – perhaps to save the marriage of her son and heir to the throne, Prince Frederik (55).
Last year there were repeated rumors that the 55-year-old was dating the Mexican celebrity Genevieve Casanova (47) had something going on – she already denied the allegations that the actress and the royal were just friends. Still, the headlines don’t stop. Does Margrethe now want to counteract the whole thing? “It is possible that the Queen took this action because she was afraid that the marriage would break down and the royal family would lose Mary (51). That would have caused major problems. The Queen has always seen Mary as a tremendous asset,” author Phil Dampier now claims to The Telegraph.
For Phil, it is an “extraordinary coincidence” that the 83-year-old announces her abdication amid the affair rumors. Apparently she even hopes that Frederik and Mary can resolve their differences in this way: “In two weeks prince and the princess set up together as king and queen, and then they have to deal with it. The Queen may think that they will sort out their differences and thereby save their marriage.”
