A lot is going to change for the 18-year-old prince.
A lot will change in the Danish royal family next weekend, when Queen Margrethe abdicates the throne after 52 years. From that moment on, 18-year-old Prince Christian will be Crown Prince of Denmark. But what else will this change for the son of the future King Frederick and Queen Mary?
Change of throne
On New Year’s Day, Danish Queen Margrethe surprised everyone with the news that she will abdicate the throne next weekend. It is the first time in about 900 years that this has happened in Denmark – a unique event! “I have decided that this is the right time. On January 14, 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I hand over the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik,” the 83-year-old Danish monarch said during her New Year’s speech on December 31.
And with such a change of throne also comes new titles. Crown Prince Frederik will take over from his mother and will from then on bear the title His Majesty King Frederik X. His wife will be known as Her Majesty Queen Mary. Together they will then become the King and Queen of Denmark.
New title for Christian
A new title is also on the horizon for Prince Christian. He is currently in the final year of high school at the Ordrup Gymnasium in Gentofte and celebrated his eighteenth birthday last October with an extensive gala dinner – where Crown Princess Amalia was also a guest. So far a relatively normal (as far as that is possible as a young royal) existence. Once his father becomes King of Denmark, he will be first in line to the throne and will bear the title HRH Crown Prince Christian. But that’s not all, because Frederik and Mary’s son faces more big changes.
Financial support and public duties
There is a possibility that the young prince will receive a large royal stipend. It was previously announced by the Danish Royal Palace that Prince Christian would not receive financial support from the Folketing (parliament) ‘until he turns 21 or upon a possible change of throne, if that occurs before that’. And the latter is now the case.
It is not yet known whether Christian will expand his public duties in his new position, but the Danish palace said of the prince on his 18th birthday: “The main priority for the coming year will be the completion of his upper secondary education.” After completing high school, Christian may decide to go to college like his parents and will likely pursue military training like his father.
Moving to Amalienborg?
Something will also change for Christian’s brothers and sisters – although the consequences for them are much smaller. Once Frederik and Mary become king and queen, all their children will move up in the line of succession to the throne. After Prince Christian, Princess Isabella will be second in line, followed by Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. The family currently resides at Frederick VIII’s Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. It is not known whether they will move to Christian IX’s palace in Amalienborg, which Queen Margrethe currently calls home. To be continued, so!
