Make appointments
Before irritations arise, you have to come up with rules together. Consider simple agreements that make living together easier. Who cleans what? How many degrees do we set the heating to? Do we eat together? Do we share the groceries? It may be a little awkward to do this at the beginning, especially if you don’t know each other yet, but it is very sensible.
Report when you are eating/being at home
One is in a relationship, the other works in the catering industry in the evenings and the other likes to go back to the parental home. It’s nice to let each other know when who is home. You do this via an app or via an old-fashioned paper calendar. Because waiting for your roommate to come home while he/she sleeps with someone else is not fun for anyone.
To agree
Living with your bestie is something many of us dream about. Together every day and doing everything together. In practice it is often disappointing. You both have your own work or school, you play sports and you meet up with friends. This means there is a chance that you will lose sight of each other. So plan fun dates together. Plan an evening together and enjoy a pleasant evening in your house. It is also important to plan fun things together with housemates who are not (yet) friends. Make sure you don’t live past each other, this will only cause more irritation.
Enjoy (sometimes) in silence
Your music at volume 100 and dance along. We love it. You too? Not everyone wants to hear loud music throughout the house at any given time. Of course, there is the perfect solution for this: headphones or earphones. Take your housemates into account and enjoy your favorite songs (sometimes) in silence.
Invite people
You live in the city and your parents no longer decide when you can invite your friends home. You prefer to have the couch full of nice people every evening, but does your roommate like this too? Discuss together whether it would be convenient for you to laugh until the early hours in the living room. Does your roommate have an important appointment or exam the next morning? Then go have a drink with someone else.
Me time
Living together does not mean being together 24/7. Everyone needs a moment of peace and give it to others too. Anyone want to sleep in late? Then be quiet. Does someone need an evening alone in her/his room? Then accept that. By giving each other some me time, living together only becomes more enjoyable.
Clean up your own mess
Last but certainly not least, clean up your mess. Have you cooked? Tidy up the kitchen. Are you coming in? Hang your coat on the coat rack. Are you using the last sheet of toilet paper? Throw away the toilet roll. By cleaning up your own mess you create far fewer irritation points.
Above all, enjoy the fun time together. Express the irritations so that it does not escalate. Have fun together in your nice house.
