Royal 2024: Including a change of throne in Denmark.

What can we expect from Royal 2024? Many things are still unknown and as it stands now, there are no major royal weddings or births on the horizon. However, we can already list a few things. And the rest will follow automatically ;).

But, first of all, we would like to wish you a very Good, Healthy and Happy 2024. Many thanks for all the responses and contributions over the past year. Here’s to many happy and beautiful fashion moments in the new year.

Kind regards, Josine, Petra and other members of the MKM Team.

Change of throne in Denmark

At the last minute we received the news that Queen Margrethe of Denmark shared during yesterday’s New Year’s speech. She announced, among other things, that she will abdicate on January 14 (the day on which her father died 52 years ago, and she herself has therefore been queen for 52 years). Margrethe has always said that she wants to remain queen until her death. Unfortunately, she has developed various health problems, especially with her back. She had this operation last February.

Due to her health problems, Queen Margrethe has started to think about whether it is time to abdicate the throne. Much about the coming throne is still unclear. For example: will she remain Queen Margrethe or will she become a princess again, just like Beatrix? It is already clear that Crown Prince Frederik will become His Majesty King Frederik X. Crown Princess Mary will become Her Majesty Queen Mary. Prince Christian becomes Crown Prince Christian. More details will be announced over the next 2 weeks. The fact is that 2024 is off to a more spectacular start than we thought! And, this whole situation may also be the reason Mary took a break from the radar to relax in her native country just before the big moment.

New Year’s receptions

  • As usual, the Danes will kick things off with their New Year’s reception on January 1, 2024 (today!) in Christian VII’s palace. Present are: Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim, Princess Marie and Princess Benedkeek. A number of New Year’s receptions will follow in Denmark on January 3 and 4. Today’s New Year’s reception is the first time the Danes will see Queen Margrethe and the crown prince couple again, after the announcement of the change of throne.

Births

  • Princess Alexandra of Luxembourg and her husband Nicolas Bagory are expecting their first child in the spring.
  • Prince Félix and Princess Claire of Luxembourg are expecting their 3rd child. It has not been announced when the baby is expected. The announcement already came on July 13, 2023, so it could be born at any time.

  • Prince Jean and Princess Philomena d’Orleans are expecting their 6th child around the turn of the year. Prince Jean is already 58, and his wife Philomena is 46. If the French monarchy still existed, this prince would probably currently be King of France. Instead, they are now Count and Countess of Paris. Update: the child was born on December 31, 2023 (and therefore no longer belongs in this blog). They had a son: Alphonse Charles François Marie. He is the brother of Prince Gaston, Princess Antoinette, Princess Louise-Marguerite, Prince Joseph and Princess Jacinthe.
