Background information

Plasterk is a Dutch scientist and former politician. He has been promoted to biologist, specialized in molecular genetics and has won several prizes for this: Grand Prix Scientifique de la Fondation NRJ and Spinoza Prize.

The scientist has been married to Els Beumer since 1988, with whom he has two children: Wouter and Willem Plasterk. His wife Els worked as a guidance expert for Youth Protection and Probation. Officially, the two never dated, they met through mutual friends and started meeting up more and more often. After a few months the match turned out to be so bad that Ronald immediately asked her to marry him.

Youth

Ronald Plasterk was born on April 12, 1957 in De Venen in The Hague. He started high school at Sint-Janscollege and went on to study biology at Leiden University. Here he graduated with honors as a doctor. He then studied economics at the University of Amsterdam in 1980.

Ronald’s father, Klaus, was sent to a boarding school in the Netherlands by his German parents at the age of 11, just before the Second World War. As a result, he and his brother Hans also grew up in the Netherlands, but they only saw their parents again 11 years later. Career

The scientist has made many leaps in his career, starting with his position as professor where he conducted scientific research and taught classes in Molecular genetics, Developmental genetics and Novel strategies for success to therapeutics. He did this at various institutions: University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University. He also worked at a research school of the Netherlands Cancer Institute as a professor of developmental genetics.

Between 2007 and 2010 he was ex-parliamentary Minister of Education, Culture and Science in the Balkenende IV cabinet. After this he became a Member of Parliament for the PvdA and Minister of Foreign Affairs. It did not stop there, because between 2012 and 2017 he was Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations in the Rutte II cabinet.

Ronald’s net worth is unclear. It is known that he sold his own biotech startup Frame Pharmaceuticals for 32 million. As a minister in the Balkenende IV cabinet for the PvdA, he earned €400,000 gross. As Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, his salary is estimated at €900,000. As a Member of Parliament he earned about €250,000 in addition.
