We all want to grow old, but we prefer not to feel old. A lick of make-up here or there can make a big difference in how fresh we appear. However, to make the most of your appearance, you’ll want to avoid these five mistakes that can actually make you look older than you are.
1. Shimmery eyeshadow
You’ve probably been using the same eyeshadow palette with the same shiny eyeshadow colors for years. It used to be your go-to, but as you get older, it’s good to re-evaluate the colors. Shine accentuates and the fine lines and loose skin around your eyes therefore stand out even more. With a matte, lighter eye shadow you can create depth in a beautiful way and draw attention to your eyes, without those annoying signs of age stealing the show.
2. Mascara
We were once taught that it works to make your eyes appear more open: applying mascara to your lower eyelashes. And although a lick of mascara on your lower lashes makes your eyes look extra beautiful, we quickly use too much mascara. If you paint your entire lower eyelashes black, you will draw attention downwards, towards dark circles under your eyes, for example. Only apply a little mascara to the base of your lower lash line and do not extend the brush completely to the ends.
3. Blush
You often hear that blush is no longer suitable as you get older. However, that is not entirely true, because blush can also give a youthful look. It is just important to apply the color in a different place. As you get older, your cheeks also droop slightly and if you apply blush to them, you draw attention to them again. Place the blush slightly higher and towards your hairline and you will immediately create a lifting effect. Make-up artists recommend using a cream blush for mature skin, due to the low moisture content in the skin. And don’t forget: a little goes a long way.
4. Dark lipstick
Unfortunately, the older you get, the thinner the lips. A dark and bright lipstick color draws attention to your lips and at the same time makes them look even smaller. That cannot be the intention! Your lips are also a place on your face where fine lines form and they are emphasized, sigh. Fortunately, nowadays there are beautiful softer lipstick colors, such as a beautiful nude shade. We are fans!
5. Basic
The base should always be good for our makeup looks. With a nice concealer or color corrector we can magically remove dark circles and make spots disappear. However, it can also be counterproductive, because if you apply too much product to an imperfection, the makeup will accentuate it. The key is therefore to build your base slowly and use the right tools. Just like with the blush, a little bit is often enough. Use a sponge to apply your foundation, concealer and other products with a dabbing motion. This ensures that everything is well distributed over your face, so that wrinkles and lines are removed beautifully and naturally. Use a powder to set everything, so your perfect makeup will last all day.
