Being rejected is never fun. Sometimes we can let the fear of rejection hold us back. That’s sometimes a shame, because we might miss out on things. Do you want to get rid of your fear of rejection? Then, according to TikTok, you should try ‘rejection therapy’. Here’s what you need to know about it.

What is rejection therapy?

Rejection therapy is the latest TikTok solution for rejection anxiety. You expose yourself to situations where you may encounter rejection or strange looks from people. The purpose of this is to confront yourself with rejection so often that your fear of it disappears. TikTok is full of videos of people putting themselves in uncomfortable situations in the name of rejection therapy. Sometimes this turns out to be very funny, but sometimes it also brings very beautiful things. For example, a woman applied to Harvard expecting to be rejected, but this turned out not to be the case at all.

This is how you do rejection therapy

To participate in this crazy trend, you simply have to do something with the goal of being rejected. So you do something crazy and daring with the expectation that you will be rejected. The idea is that if you do this often enough, you will no longer fear rejection, funny looks, or being laughed at. Rejection therapy is not an official form of therapy. It is somewhat similar to exposure therapy. If you want to try this technique, we recommend not throwing yourself into very scary situations right away. Start with small, achievable challenges that take you slightly out of your comfort zone. For example, you can ask a stranger for help or compliment your crush. These kinds of mildly uncomfortable situations help you take baby steps in the right direction. Do this regularly, maybe even a few times a week. Then process these moments by writing about them in a journal or talking about them with friends. Describe how you felt in the moment and what you learned from it. Also compare your expectations with the actual outcome. This also allows you to learn something new about yourself and the people around you.

How effective this technique is will vary per person. How anxious you are about yourself can play a big role in how long it will take for the therapy to have an effect. But it certainly won’t hurt to give it a try, who knows what life will bring you if you are daring!
