Harry’s book competes, among others, against Britney Spears’ biography.
Happy news for Prince Harry. His memoirs have a great chance of winning the major British Books Awards. With his book Spare he has been nominated for ‘Book of the Year’ in the non-fiction category. He is also up for the award for audiobook of the year.
Best-selling book of the year
In 2023, Prince Harry’s book was the best-selling book of the year in the United Kingdom. In the memoirs, the prince writes about his experiences within the royal family. For example, he discusses his deteriorated relationship with his brother Prince William.
Competitors
Together with five other books, Spare has been shortlisted for the title ‘Book of the Year’. The biography of Britney Spears is also included in the list. For the award for audiobook of the year, the prince competes with, among others, the book Making it so, by actor Patrick Stewart.
If Prince Harry walks away with the coveted prizes, this will not be the first time that a British royal has won a prize for a book. For example, his father King Charles was named British Writer of the Year in 1990.
Spare
The title Spare, ‘reserve’ in Dutch, refers to the label that Prince Harry has actually had his entire life. As the king’s second son, he is the ‘reserve’ heir apparent. In England this is a common way of referring to the future monarch and their brother or sister: the heir and the spare. The idea of this is simple: will something happen to the heir? Then there is a backup child to take over that role.
