This miracle product is useful for cooking, cleaning and in our beauty routine, but did you know that it is also useful for extinguishing a flame?
Baking soda
making shampoo, making bath bombs, removing stubborn stains, unclogging pipes, descaling and cooking… Is there anything you can’t do with baking soda? You often keep the remedy in your kitchen cupboard, but don’t you do that yet? Then it is useful to do that from now on. The powder also works as a safety measure if the pan catches fire.
Flame in the pan
Some of us are not such stars in the kitchen, but even if you characterize yourself as a star chef, a fire can happen while cooking. Oil or butter can become too hot, quickly causing a flame. This can occur not only in a regular pan, but also in a deep fryer: this happens when the auto-ignition temperature of 315 degrees Clesius is reached, or when the oil or butter comes into contact with the flame.
No water
No matter how big the fall may be, never panic. Acting equally is important. It is logical that you act out of instinct and immediately want to throw water on the fire, but don’t do that! A flash fire is then created: the water immediately boils when it comes into contact with hot oil, creating a steam cloud that spreads fine oil particles. So throwing water on the fire makes the situation even worse.
To extinguish a fire
If you can’t use water, what can you do? If a fire breaks out in the pan, it is best to turn off the heat, put a lid on the pan and turn off the extractor hood. If you do not yet have an F-class fire extinguisher, the fire extinguisher that can be used specifically for grease fires, it might be wise to get one. They are available in both small and large varieties, making it easy to store them in a kitchen cupboard. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher and don’t want to buy one, it helps to throw a large pile of baking soda on the flame. Think of it like throwing sand on a campfire, and baking soda is very useful in putting out a fireplace. No baking soda? Salt also suffices.
