The drama series The Crown has been captivating royal fans in front of their television screens since 2016. The Netflix show shows the life of the British royal family around Queen Elizabeth II (✝96). But after seven eventful years, this is now over: the hit series ends with the current sixth season. Now the series creator reveals why the show ends in 2005 instead of the present!
“I always felt like I didn’t want to come straight to the present,” explains screenwriter Peter Morgan in a Netflix feature. From the beginning, he wanted to maintain a cautious distance from current events. “I’m proud that I made it to the end and did what I said,” says Peter, satisfied with the end of the series. In his eyes, the show “stopped at exactly the right time.”
The first part of the final season definitely caught the fans: According to the ratings meter, the first four episodes of the royal series from November 13th to 19th recorded the most minutes streamed. In total it flickered across the screens for 943 million minutes. Grey’s Anatomy came in second with 937 million minutes.
