Oh no: King Albert became unwell during holiday

According to insiders, the king is now doing well again.

An aging monarch and a nice holiday – it turns out not to be a formula for success. Earlier this year, Norwegian King Harald was struck by health problems during his holiday, and now it appears that Belgian King Albert also became unwell while enjoying his free time, the Belgian court reports.

Fallen

Belgian King Albert was enjoying a lovely sun-drenched holiday in the south of France when he suddenly became unwell. At the beginning of this week he became unwell and had a nasty fall. The palace has said that fortunately his condition is not critical.

“King Albert became unwell in the south of France at the beginning of this week and also fell,” confirms Lore Vandoorne, the palace spokesperson. “A doctor came to visit, but he did not end up in hospital. His condition has never been life-threatening. He’s doing well. Yesterday he FaceTimed with Princess Claire when she did an activity in Verviers.”

Big party

On June 6 there is a big party in Belgium and the king’s 90th birthday is celebrated. “A number of festivities are planned for his 90th birthday, including a party for friends at Belvédère Castle. These festivities will not be compromised,” the palace further confirms.

The king has been struggling with some health problems for some time. Last year he was admitted to hospital due to dehydration symptoms. He also reportedly had a blood infection at the time. For this he had to stay in the Saint-Luc hospital in Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe for eight days. Fortunately, the problems were resolved in a timely manner.

During Belgian King’s Day on November 15, the king seemed to be doing better. He did need a walking stick and he leaned on his wife Paola. The former monarch last appeared in public during Easter.
