Our new favorite holiday!
On July 29th, they celebrate National Lipstick Day in America! And if there is one holiday that we should adopt from the Americans, it is this one. To put this day a little extra in the spotlight, we share a few steps to make your lipstick last all day.
1: Exfoliate and moisturize
A lipstick stays on best when your lips are soft and smooth. That means you first have to make sure all those nasty little flakes are scrubbed away. And you can do that literally: if you don’t have a lip scrub handy, you can just use a toothbrush with a little Vaseline or lip balm on it. Scrubbing your lips removes the dead skin cells, giving the lipstick a smooth surface to stick to. This not only helps with the durability, but also ensures that the color is applied more evenly.
Please note: after exfoliating, always apply an extra layer of balm to keep your lips well hydrated. This will prevent them from drying out and cracking, which will definitely benefit the lifespan of your lipstick.
2: Lip primer
Scrub, balm, prep and prime! This should be your mantra from now on before you put a lip liner or lipstick anywhere near your lips. A primer will not only make applying lipstick easier, but it will also help it stay on longer.
A good lip primer forms a base layer that helps fill in fine lines and prevents the color from running into the edges of your lips. You can basically think of it as a kind of double-sided tape for your lipstick, which makes it adhere better and fade less quickly. A flawless finish all day long!
3: Lip liner
A lip liner is an essential step for a sleek and neat result. But did you know that you can use a lip liner for more than just defining the edges of your lips? By applying the liner all over your lip, you create a base layer that helps keep your lipstick in place. It also prevents the color from smudging as the day progresses.
4: Time for lipstick
Choose your lipstick and apply it. After applying, don’t forget to blot away any excess lipstick with a tissue. Do this gently and don’t wipe, because you want to create as little stains as possible.
5: Set with a powder
Just as you set your foundation and concealer with a powder, you can do the same with your lipstick. Use a makeup brush to apply a small amount of translucent powder over your lipstick. This will help set the color and ensure it stays put all day. Doubly handy: powder also absorbs excess oils that can cause your lipstick to shift or run.
Please note: make sure you don’t use too much powder, as a thick layer can leave your lips feeling dry and cakey, which is not something anyone wants!
