It is not made easy for Monica Geuze by the viewers of The Masked Singer. In the fifth season she is the newcomer on the jury. Great fun for her, but she does receive some criticism from viewers and Angela de Jong in the beginning. In Open Map by Robbert Rodenburg she says that it certainly affects her, but she still doesn’t mind it.

Now that The Masked Singer has already reached season five in the Netherlands, it is nice to have a breath of fresh air within the team. Well, you would think so. Nevertheless, newcomer Monica Geuze received some criticism for her debut as a jury member. Especially when she called audience favorite Loretta Schrijver an “old tang”, she immediately had the puppets dancing. In addition to criticism from viewers, she also received comments from – how could it be otherwise? – columnist Angela de Jong. “I found her very annoying, I have to tell you,” Angela said about Monica’s debut.
In Robbert Rodenburg’s latest Open Card, and also the last episode of the season, he speaks with his good friend Monica. And ‘coincidentally’ it is also about criticism, which of course includes a statement about The Masked Singer. He wonders if the criticism does anything to her. Or does she give a shit about this? “I feel bad about it in a way,” she responds. “But of course it does something to me.” It can also certainly make her “insecure”. Although she also thinks: “That whole season is already over, so I can’t do anything about it now.”

Yet she is certainly criticized. Monica is also just a human being. She does try to focus on the fact that she really enjoys it. “Then you shouldn’t give a shit about what other people say about you,” she says. According to her, she should be able to handle some criticism. That’s part of her job. “But of course if I’m sitting on the couch at home and you read that about yourself, it doesn’t make you feel better about it,” says Monica.
She understands that people criticize her debut in The Masked Singer. “It is such a well-watched program, half of the Netherlands watches it and suddenly after four seasons there is a change,” she explains. “I completely understand that not everyone wants that.” She gives the example of the arrival of a new coach in The Voice Of Holland. “Then I also thought: why does Anouk have to sit there?” she says. “And then Anouk was there for a season and oh woe, when she threatens to say: no, I’m not going to do it anymore. Now you’re there too, now I think you’re absolutely fantastic.” Hopefully for Monica, viewers of The Masked Singer will get used to her too. Who knows, maybe the positive comments will flood into her DMs every week.
