The time for looking back has come. Today: the nine hats that Máxima debuted in 2023.
Let’s start with the homegrown designs. The Dutch milliner Berry Rutjes delivered the hand-painted flower for Prinsjesdag 2023 to Máxima.
Rutjes’ second hat appeared during a noble wedding in Spain. It is a slanted saucer hat with silk flowers on the inside. So it’s easy to guess what the milliner’s trademark is.
Jolanda, Máxima’s maid, covered a donut with the fabric of the dress for the state visit.
The backside:
To commemorate our country’s history of slavery, Jolanda made a dark blue hat with a deeper meaning. The application on the hat is a subtle reference to the Angisa, the Surinamese-Creole headscarf that was previously worn by female slaves on the plantations. The base is a square starched cloth, which is folded in a zigzag manner.
The velvet hat that appeared this fall comes from the studio of Fabienne Delvigne.
The sun hat that appeared during the Caribbean trip was purchased at 360Five Everyday.
And last but not least, three hats by the Irish milliner Philip Treacy also appeared.
All in all, it was a beautiful, varied and economical hat year. With five state visits, several regional visits and commemorations, I certainly don’t think nine new hats are much. Which one do I like best? The latter, worn at the coronation of King Charles. The architectural, sculptural form, which comes into its own due to the delicate upper body underneath: I give the overall picture a big ten. Which hat do you like best?
