Looking back: the nicest moments of the royal family in Emmen today

From designers and tompouces to Amalia’s year in Spain and Alexia’s choice of study!

After 22 years, today it was up to Vlinderstad Emmen to put the province of Drenthe back on the map during the King’s Day festivities. And that worked out well! This is how King Willem-Alexander himself reflected during the closing of the celebration: “Well Emmen, that could have been done much less!”

Royal visit

This morning we of course already reflected on the fantastic outfits of the royal party. From the colorful butterfly details of Queen Máxima and Princess Amalia to the beautiful Sézane gown of Princess Alexia and the matching suit of Princess Ariane: we are fans!

But of course today was about much more than just the outfits. The Oranges became extensively acquainted with the region. We chatted with the crowd, tasted all kinds of delicacies, and enthusiastically took part in a quiz about the city and the province. Queen Máxima’s team managed to walk away with the win.

The Oranges were also put to work! Tompouces were handed out, doodles were made, and balls were kicked around. Prince Floris even got behind the decks to show off his DJ skills.

Amalia’s safety

Of course, attention was also paid to Amalia’s year in Spain when the family spoke to the press. To everyone’s great surprise, it was announced last week that Her Highness had lived in Madrid for a year for her safety. Although studying for a year in Madrid may sound like a dream, the Crown Princess emphasized that there was a very important reason for the move: her own safety.

“I had to move there due to certain circumstances,” she shared. But fortunately that year in Southern Europe was very successful. “I have to say: it was a great time. And it has also made life here somewhat possible again,” the Princess of Orange looked back.

Fledgling daughters

Sister Alexia has also not spent the past few months in the Netherlands. She did not reveal exactly where she had been, but she did say that she had really enjoyed traveling during her gap year. And has Your Highness already made a choice of study? Well no. “I’ll let you know when I know,” she summarized.

The youngest daughter of our royal couple had returned to the Netherlands from her Italian boarding school today especially for the occasion. Ariane revealed that she regularly gets homesick. “I’m happy to be back, because I missed my parents,” she revealed. “It’s quite a distance,” the princess looked back on her year at the UWC in Duino.

In short: a wonderful moment for the Oranjes to all be together again. And judging by the photos, they clearly enjoyed it. On to the next King’s Day!
