A black edge for the newly engaged.
On November 16, 2010, William and Kate announced the happy news that they were getting married. It had been a while since Wills had gotten down on one knee for the love of his life. The fact that they did not immediately announce their engagement seemed like the right choice at the time, but it was difficult for Kate afterwards.
In love, engaged
We know that William and Kate’s love story was not entirely without bumps. After a relationship of many years, a short break followed, but in 2010 the prince finally got down on one knee for his student sweetheart. After the proposal, the royal lovebirds spent some time together before announcing the news. Unfortunately, Kate later ‘regretted’ it, Mirror reports.
The newly engaged couples wanted to wait two weeks before making the announcement and release the news on November 3, 2010. But a day beforehand, Kate’s grandfather Peter, her last surviving grandparent, died.
Postponed
Kate is said to deeply regret not being able to share the happy news of her engagement to the prince with her grandfather. Royal family expert Katie Nicholl also writes this in her book Kate: Our Future Queen. “She knew he would have been overjoyed for her,” the writer says. William accompanied Kate to her grandfather’s funeral, which added a sad touch to the early engagement.
Ultimately, the couple postponed the announcement of their engagement for an additional two weeks, even though they had already informed their loved ones about their wedding plans. The Queen had also been aware for weeks, because by law she had to give her grandson permission for the marriage. The rest is history.
