Last Sunday the time had finally come: Joost Klein gave his first concert in the Netherlands after the terrible Eurovision Song Contest drama in Sweden. The audience at Freshtival in Enschede was treated to a dazzling show full of energy and cool beats by Joost Klein.
Europapa in the remix
At 8.45 pm Joost emerged from the smoke of a smoke machine and set the tone with an extra exciting version of his hit Europapa. “My name is Klein, but you can’t get me down, old man!” he shouted confidently at the start of his show. During his set, the audience heard an uptempo remix of Europapa, which was cut up and spread over different parts of the performance.
Only love
Although the media was on edge, Joost kept a low profile about the Eurovision Song Contest incident. “I know everyone is waiting for me to say something, but I just say love,” he declared in English, laughing. Joost himself has not yet responded substantively to his disqualification for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Joost Klein sees himself as an international artist
“Thank you for the love. That’s what it’s all about,” Joost shouted into the microphone just before he started his hit Friesenjung. Joost chose to address his audience in English. “I’m an international artist now. I’m doing my best, thanks for coming,” he added, curiously gauging how many people from Germany were there before him.
The Winner Takes It All
As the icing on the cake, Joost Klein closed his set on the Grolsch stage with a compelling version of ABBA’s iconic song The Winner Takes It All. Of course, this song also had a stirring beat, as we are used to from Joost.
Threats
The singer, who was to represent the Netherlands with the song Europapa, was involved in an incident with a camerawoman during the rehearsals of the Eurovision Song Contest. And the woman then reported threats. Joost’s lawyer claims that the singer had pushed the camera away, but denies that he made threats.
No criminal offenses
Since Joost only allegedly pushed the camera, both Joost and his lawyer are adamant that the singer is not guilty of any criminal offences. His lawyer also shared this message of innocence with Swedish media, including SVT. Although the Swedish police previously indicated that the Swedish Public Prosecution Service will probably prosecute Joost, his lawyer remains optimistic about the outcome of the police investigation. Swedish media report that this investigation is still ongoing, but a provisional trial date has already been set for early June.
