Now that peace is starting to return after the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö and Joost Klein has been able to sleep a few good nights in his own bed, his Swedish lawyer has released a statement today. Although Joost will perform in his own country next Sunday, the situation surrounding the festival continues to place a heavy burden on his mind. His lawyer, Jan-Åke Fält, shared with ANP that Joost is “very sad” about the whole situation.
Joost Klein feels desperate
“It is understandable that he feels distraught by everything that has happened,” his lawyer shared with the press today. “It has been completely taken out of context. Of course he is sad that he could not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest.”
No threats
The singer, who was to represent the Netherlands with the song Europapa, was involved in an incident with a camerawoman during the rehearsals of the Eurovision Song Contest. The woman then reported threats. Fält claims that Joost Klein pushed her camera away, but denies that the singer made threats.
Optimistic
Although the Swedish police previously indicated that the Swedish Public Prosecution Service will probably prosecute Joost, his lawyer remains optimistic about the outcome of the police investigation. Swedish media report that this investigation is still ongoing, but a provisional trial date has been set for early June. Fält also stated that requests have been submitted to hear some Dutch people. “I am optimistic about the chances of an acquittal. If the police conduct a thorough investigation, he will not be prosecuted.” The local Public Prosecution Service in Sweden and the court there cannot yet confirm this news.
No criminal offenses
Since Joost only allegedly pushed the camera, both Joost and his lawyer are adamant that the singer is not guilty of any criminal offences. His lawyer also shared this message of innocence with Swedish media, including SVT.
Threatening fist movement
The Swedish daily Aftonbladet reported the news earlier this week that Joost Klein immediately apologized profusely after the incident with the camerawoman. This report was confirmed by several anonymous sources who had been present at the incident and later reported to the Swedish newspaper. It is currently unclear whether Joost Klein’s apology has also reached the camerawoman in question.
