This superhero role was probably pretty coveted! The film adaptations of the Spider-Man comics have all enjoyed great success. Three actors have so far slipped into the role of the popular Marvel character: Tobey Maguire (48) started off, then Andrew Garfield (40) took over for two “The Amazing Spider-Man” films and finally Tom Holland (27) took the role red hero costume across the screens. But some other mega stars were also in the running for the role of Peter Parker!
As JustJared reports, some real Hollywood greats auditioned for the very first Spider-Man film. Among others, Heath Ledger (✝28), Leonardo DiCaprio (49) and James Franco (45) were discussed. Jake Gyllenhaal (43) also wanted the part, but later played as the villain Mysterio in “Spider-Man: Far From Home”. Along with Andrew Garfield Joe Jonas (34), Josh Hutcherson (31) and “Percy Jackson” actor Logan Lerman (31) were in the running.
Tom Holland also had strong competition. Timothée Chalamet (28), for example, applied for the job and even auditioned twice. Asa Butterfield (26) also had the chance to get the coveted role. But he wasn’t too sad about the rejection – because shortly afterwards he got the main role in Sex Education. “Tom did amazing things with Peter. [..] So I think everything works out in the end,” he told Collider.
