Fact or fiction: the light from your phone screen ages your skin faster

Experts explain!

Because we can no longer live without our phones, concerns about the harmful effects of blue light on our skin have increased. It is claimed that blue light can be very harmful to your skin, sometimes resulting in aged skin. But, is that really the case?

Blue light

Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Connie Yang explains that the sun is the main source of blue light. But those are not the only sources. “Digital screens such as TVs, laptops and mobile phones are additional sources, as are LED and fluorescent lighting.”

And while research into blue light is still relatively new, recent studies have shown that blue light can indeed cause hyperpigmentation, explains Dr. David Kim out.

Premature skin aging

“It has also been shown that blue-violet light can cause more hyperpigmentation than, for example, red light.” This may be because blue light leads to increased melanin production. But that’s not all the disadvantages. Dr. Hamdan Abdullah Hamed says: “Blue light can also lead to other forms of premature skin aging. Blue light generates active substances, which can lead to premature skin aging, fine lines, wrinkles and uneven pigmentation.”

Advice

But should we all stop sitting behind our screens so much? According to the researchers, that is a difficult question. According to them, it is still too early to say whether skin aging caused by blue light applies to everyone.

However, they do agree that people who want to improve their skin pigmentation should step away from their screens a little more. “If you are constantly sitting in front of a blue screen, you need anti-blue light skin care. Ideally, I would first invest in blue light glasses to protect your eyes from the damage,” Hamed explains. “Noticeable effects vary depending on the person’s age, skin elasticity and other factors.”
