The youngest princess can now enjoy a well-deserved holiday.
The next generation of royals grows up and flies out. This also applies to the youngest A’tje, Princess Ariane, who left her parental palace behind her last August and went to a prestigious Italian boarding school. And now her first year of school is already over!
UWC Adriatic
In case you missed it completely: last year Princess Ariane exchanged the Christian Gymnasium Sorghvliet in The Hague – nice and easy to reach by bike from Huis ten Bosch – for a place at the United World College, and more precisely to be their Adriatic department.
This prestigious boarding school is part of an international school community with locations all over the world. One well-known department is of course that impressive castle in Wales, where father Willem-Alexander and big sister Alexia, among others, obtained their International Baccalaureate. But the UWC has a bigger goal than just sending its students home with a piece of paper after two years.
“We believe that education should help young people discover that change is possible and that they can achieve it,” the school community states on their website. In practice, this means that students at one of the prestigious boarding schools, in addition to their regular curriculum, are also involved in all kinds of charity projects and initiatives in the areas of, for example, sustainability, diversity and community.
Musical conclusion
The branch in Duino, where Ariane has now completed her first year, focuses particularly on developing musical talent. “Music plays a major role at the UWC Adriatic thanks to the presence of an in-house music academy,” the website reads.
It will therefore not surprise you that the end of the year this weekend was accompanied by a lot of musical performances. For example, the boarding school’s website and social media show that an a cappella group performed there, and that the school choir also made an appearance.

In addition, the school’s second-year students received their diplomas here, and both teachers and alumni gave speeches for the students. Of course, our princess cannot be seen in any of the snapshots, unfortunately.
Safe at home
A quick look at the school’s annual calendar reveals that the pupils have had little time to recover from this festive end of the year. The next day the return home was already planned. And that means that Ariane is finally close to her parents and sisters again!
On King’s Day, the princess revealed that it was quite difficult for her to be so far away from the family: “I am happy to be back, because I missed my parents,” she said at the time. “It’s quite a distance,” the princess looked back on her year at the UWC in Duino. Fortunately, she now has a summer to recover from all the homesickness, so that she can start her second year in August with fresh courage. And then? On to that coveted diploma!
