We all have a hobby, right? Due to our busy lives, it can sometimes be difficult to actually make time for your hobby. Do you really need a hobby? TikTok thinks so.

There has been a lot of discourse on TikTok lately about having, or not having, hobbies. Different creators on the app try out a number of hobbies to see which ones suit them best. But it turns out that many people find it difficult to find a hobby that really keeps their attention. Others indicate that they cannot find a hobby due to a lack of time, energy or money. But no hobby is also not an option, because everyone hates being asked what they do in their spare time, only to have to answer with ‘nothing’. As a result, the consensus on TikTok has become that it is important to have a hobby.

But do you really need a hobby?
If you don’t think about it too much, not having hobbies seems like a red flag. You may come across as boring or lazy. We often feel that having hobbies makes us appear more interesting and organized. Without having a regular activity to fill your free time, you can become a victim of couch potatoes. This goes against the idea within our society that we should always be doing something productive. Hobbies can feel like a way to justify having free time. You are doing something that is good for you, so it is okay that you are not busy with household chores, school or work. Your hobby shows the outside world that you are interesting, creative or motivated. It’s a good conversation topic for a first date.
But having a hobby should actually be something that you get satisfaction from. What goes wrong on TikTok is that people feel like they have to have a hobby. And because of that pressure you put on yourself, you don’t give yourself the chance to really find something you like. You do it because you have to, and not because you really want to. Our advice: only start a hobby if you really need it. Having a hobby is not an obligation, you have to enjoy it yourself! After all, that’s the whole point of a hobby!
