A few weeks ago we shared the sad news that the fairytale marriage for the Albanian Crown Prince Leka ended in divorce. However, it now seems that there was more going on behind the palace walls than the reports from the court suggested. For example, a video of a fight has been leaked and His Highness now claims that he was ‘attacked’ by his ex and animal father.
Parting
It sounds like a fairy tale: Crown Prince Leka and his Princess Elia met each other around 2003, when they were both studying in Paris. They got engaged in 2010, and married in the fall of 2016. On October 22, 2020, the crown princely couple also had a daughter, Princess Geraldine. She was named after her great-grandmother, Queen Geraldine of Albania.
So far, so good. But in mid-January the couple announced that their relationship had come to an end. “Since the marriage has lost its purpose, they have decided to end it by mutual consent and take the necessary legal steps,” the prince shared in an official statement at the time.
Brawl
However, this divorce is now turning into a literal contested divorce. There are all kinds of images circulating of the Albanian crown prince, his ex-wife, and ex-father-in-law, Gjergj Polikron Zaharia, involved in a lot of pushing and shoving.
According to Prince Leka, Elia and Gjergj were behind the attack. In an official message from the court, the prince states that he was ‘physically attacked with heavy objects by his ex-wife and ex-father-in-law’.
However, Princess Elia claims that when she returned home she saw how her ex-husband ‘abused’ her father. She told the Albanian Daily News that she was merely trying to separate the two to end the “terrible” fight. “It is a very difficult situation for me and my family because it is not easy to return home and find Leka trying to violate my 73-year-old father,” the princess’ spokesperson said. “The conflict had nothing to do with me other than me trying to stop it. I always follow the legal path.”

The team behind the crown prince denounces that the video of the fight, which was filmed by Leka himself, has been made public. “The videos were only shared with the police station by Prince Leka Il Zogu as evidence of the violence inflicted on him.”
“Despite being deemed confidential, these materials, together with his testimony, have now been widely circulated on social networks and in the media,” the court said.
It is unclear who exactly is responsible for the leaking of the images. In any case, the court has announced that they are ‘deeply disappointed’ and are asking the police to intervene in an attempt to remove the images from the internet.
It seems that this divorce could become a particularly vicious battle between the crown prince and his ex-wife. Hopefully the situation can be resolved somewhat peacefully, and their daughter will experience as little of the conflict as possible.
