4X things you should not do to save energy

We do everything we can to save energy at home, but there are some things that are better left undone. We will tell you what they are here.

Save energy (and money).

Energy has become more expensive again this year, and we are therefore doing everything we can to limit energy costs. We come up with the craziest DIY projects, come up with the wildest life hacks and share this exuberantly with each other. Yet some things are counterproductive and actually cost you even more money. That’s why we’ve made a list of things you should not do.

1. Laptop under the covers

You know how it is: your laptop is working overtime, almost taking off and getting super hot. It is therefore a nice source of heat when you are sitting on the couch or in bed, because it can warm your lap quite a bit. When you are cold under the covers, it is very tempting to grab the laptop to give you some extra warmth. But this is not a good idea: the laptop battery cannot dissipate heat this way, which can lead to a fire.

2. Seal holes, cracks and grilles

It may seem logical to close all holes, cracks and grilles when you are cold, so that no more cold air can get in. After all, that’s how you keep the heat in, right? No, we have ventilation grilles for a reason. They ensure that the humidity in the house is maintained, which is especially important in winter.

3. Do not use heating

Anyone who thinks that keeping the heating off will save money is mistaken. This also has to do with humidity. When you stop turning on the heating altogether to save energy and costs, you forget that the indoor air cannot allow the moisture to evaporate, causing mold to form on the walls. In addition, bacteria and silverfish really enjoy this humidity. A cold and damp house is therefore not good for your health, and it is really not worth saving a few cents.

4. Old-fashioned stove

Okay, you don’t want to turn on the heat, but use the wood stove instead to save money. This is actually not a good option either. Why? When burning wood, a lot of particulate matter is released. In addition, a fireplace can also be dangerous because it can cause a fire in the house. Therefore, clean the fireplace and chimney regularly so that fine particles do not enter the house and catch fire. One in three home fires starts with a clogged chimney, so remember this carefully!
