Not everyone’s favorite job, but still necessary: cleaning the windows. To be able to look outside, the windows must be clean, and this is how you do it.
Window cleaning
It may not be a fun job, but you shouldn’t skip it during your next big cleaning. It’s nice not to see fingerprints, leaves, cobwebs and streaks on the window when the sun shines through it. There is just one small problem: if you don’t handle it properly, you will end up with even dirtier windows, and they will look dirtier than before the intensive cleaning. Fortunately, this problem is common, so we know best how to best approach window cleaning.
You need this
You probably already have it all at home and may already know the tips, but it is still useful to list all the supplies you need. This is what you need to get your windows clean and streak-free and to clean them properly:
- Bucket
- Hot water
- Window puller
- Dishwashing liquid or glass cleaner
- Soft sponge or microfiber cloth
- Microfiber cloth or old newspapers
- Possibly vinegar for stubborn stains and smudges
This is how you do it
- First go over the window with a duster and first remove any dirt and dust residues. This way you can prevent scratches on the window while washing, because you have first wiped away small damaging particles such as sand.
- Then fill the bucket with warm water and add a very small dash of dishwashing liquid or glass cleaner. Too much dish soap, glass cleaner or soap can quickly leave streaks on the window, so be careful how much soap you put in.
- Then dip the sponge or microfiber cloth in the soapy water and try to soak the window as thoroughly as possible. Work from top to bottom, remembering to go well around the edges and corners. This way you have soaped everything thoroughly and there is no spot left untreated. Please note that any caustic agents are not good for the window frame, so read carefully in advance.
- Rinse the soapy water off the windows with clean water to remove the soap residue. Do this with a garden hose if you are outside, or inside with a clean sponge and clean water from a bucket.
- Now it’s time to dry: use the window squeegee and start at the top of the window. Pull the squeegee down in a straight line, wiping the squeegee well after each stroke to avoid streaks.
- Do you still have streaks on the window? Then it is best to remove it with a dry microfiber cloth or old newspapers. If the streaks do not disappear, you can remove the stubborn streaks with a mixture of vinegar and water.
- Are you still not satisfied with the result? Then you repeat the whole process again, as long as it works. Cleaning windows is a breeze with these tips!
