Tiara time! Swedish royals host stylish state banquet

With a special tiara debut from Princess Sofia!

After the Netherlands and Belgium, Sweden is now the host country for an atmospheric state visit. The first day took place yesterday, which of course ended with a fantastic state banquet!

State visits

We can’t believe our luck in terms of state visits this month. First, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde welcomed their Luxembourgish colleagues (and cousin) Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa. A day later it was up to our own King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima to receive their Spanish friends, King Felipe and Queen Letizia.

Yesterday, the third state visit of the month started: the Swedish royal couple, Carl Gustaf and Silvia, warmly welcomed Finnish President Alexander Stubb and first lady Suzanne Innes-Stubb.

Good neighbor

As neighboring countries, it is important to strengthen ties every now and then. And a state visit is of course the perfect method for this. A bit of business, a bit of culture, a bit of chatting, and above all: a lot of atmosphere.

Yesterday, the Finnish visit was accompanied by an official welcome and a shared press conference by the two heads of state. This was followed by a lunch, attended by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, as well as Prince Carl Philip and his Princess Sofia. The afternoon was further filled with, among other things, a tech conference and a visit to the Bernadotte library.

State banquet

The day naturally ended with a royal state visit, where the guests were all present in full regalia. The party was of course led by King Carl Gustaf and President Alexander. They were closely followed by Queen Silvia and First Lady Suzanne, who both appeared very colorful. For example, Silvia wore a highlighter pink Georg et Arend gown, which she combined with the beautiful Nine-tooth tiara.

In comparison, Princess Victoria opted for a particularly subtle look with a white Toteme gown, which featured sweet cape sleeves and was finished with feathers. The Boucheron laurel tiara adorned her crown, and in terms of other jewelry, the crown princess also kept it relatively simple with a good dose of diamonds.

Princess Sofia dressed herself for the occasion in a fairytale blue Oscar de la Renta gown, which she first wore in 2015. Well: why shop for a new outfit when you have such a designer gem in your closet, right? The princess wore her diamond Palmette tiara, with a set of deep blue stones – more about that later.

The last members of the royal party were Princess Christina and her husband, Tord Magnuson. The king’s younger sister dressed in a dark dress with ditto jacket, in which we noticed a subtle glitter. The Connaught tiara in her gray locks and the impressive collection of pearls around her neck completed the look radiantly.

New tiara

As promised, we will briefly return to Princess Sofia’s Palmette tiara. Because your highness debuted a new setting for this versatile diadem last night!

Carl Philip’s wife has worn many different versions of this crown over the years. The Court Jeweler reports that we have now seen the Palmette jewel with pearls, emerald, turquoise, blue topaz, citrine, diamond, and now this new mystery gem. This may possibly be a set of deep blue sapphires, but it is not entirely certain.

The princess can now cross off another color of the rainbow with this new setting of the Palmette diadem. Who knows what kind of jewelry she will debut in the coming years – we certainly see plenty of potential tiara toppers for this versatile diadem!
