Christmas traditions in the Netherlands USA worldwide
There are a lot of Christmas traditions in the Netherlands, but people all over the world have all kinds of Christmas traditions. In the Netherlands we think of traditions such as gourmet dining and decorating the Christmas tree. For example, did you know that they go to KFC in Japan? Or that you eat Christmas pudding for good luck in Slovakia? Maybe we should do that in the Netherlands too!
Decorate the Christmas tree
Perhaps the most famous Christmas tradition is decorating the Christmas tree. This activity is so obvious that we have to include it in this list of traditions. Whether you decorate the tree alone, with your partner or with your mother: it is and remains a fun activity. Turn on Christmas music and make it a fun daytime activity!
Advent calendar and candles
We all know the nice Advent calendars that are in stores every year. Opening such an Advent calendar is of course a real Christmas tradition. We are counting down until Christmas Day. Many people also burn a candle every Advent day (Sunday) to count down. When you light the fourth candle, you know it’s Christmas.
Christmas packages
If you are part of a team, there is a good chance that you will receive a Christmas gift. This is a tradition that is present in almost every field of work. As an employer, you thank your employee with a nice package full of Christmas items, snacks and/or drinks.
Gourmet
You hate it or you love it: gourmet food. Many families in the Netherlands turn on the gourmet set again during Christmas. It is a tradition that many Dutch people continue during the holidays. It is an activity that fits well with the Christmas holidays, because you enjoy delicious food together.
Watch Christmas movies
Another thing that many people see as a real Christmas tradition is watching Christmas movies. Of course that is also part of it. Love Actually, Home Alone or The Grinch. These are Christmas films that we actually want to watch every year during Christmas. Which Christmas movie is your favorite?
