The best friends go way back and have shared all the important moments in each other’s lives.
Queen Máxima has lived in all kinds of places around the world, but since she met Willem-Alexander, she has led a completely different life than she could imagine before. However, one thing has always remained the same: her close friendship with Samantha Deane. The best friends have known each other since kindergarten in Argentina and – despite the distance – are still inseparable.
From kindergarten…
With a very busy job and family life, it is not easy to maintain friendships. Queen Máxima has a number of friends in her life, but Samantha stands head and shoulders above the rest. The best friends go way back and have shared all the important moments in each other’s lives.
Back to the beginning. Máxima and Samantha met each other at kindergarten in Argentina. It was a big hit straight away, especially when they both went to Northlands School. Then their paths parted. Samantha left for England, while Máxima lived in New York and Brussels. Yet they have kept in touch all this time.
…to the Dutch nobility
Although their lives look very different now, the two are still best friends. Samantha was best man at the wedding of Willem-Alexander and Máxima and is the godmother of Princess Amalia. Samantha is now also married to a Dutchman, whom she met through her best friend. In 2004, she married Willem Frederik van Welderen Baron Rengers, a good friend of the king.
We don’t have many photos of Samantha, but she can be seen in the video below as godmother to Princess Amalia. She is the lady with the brown hat that you see standing between Willem-Alexander and Máxima at 4:48.
Nowadays, Samantha is committed to sustainability and eco-friendly initiatives. For example, a quick look at her LinkedIn page shows that she is now committed to her own Kelp Forest Foundation, which conducts research into seaweed as a sustainable alternative in many different sectors. Over the years, there have been quite a few kilometers between Máxima and her best friend, but it is clear: the two are still there for each other through thick and thin!
