And with that, the dress just doesn’t break the record of the iconic sheep sweater.
Last night someone paid a large amount again for an item of Diana’s clothing. This time it was an evening dress of the late princess. The item fetched as much as $900,000 at auction.
Small million
From her ball gowns to her jewelry and even personal letters: everyone seems to want a piece of Diana, and some are willing to dig deep into their pockets. Yesterday, yet another auction of the princess’s belongings took place, and someone went home with an evening dress and an empty bank account. This royalty fan paid $900,000 for the dress. A lot more than the experts at Auction House Julien’s Auctions had expected: they had estimated in advance that the dress would fetch $100,000 to $200,000.
More items
The auctioned dress was designed by Moroccan-British designer Jacques Azagury, and was worn by Lady Di twice: once during a dinner in Florence, and once during a performance by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in Canada. In addition to the dress, another item from Diana went under the hammer last night. The blouse she wore in her engagement portrait was estimated in advance at $80,000 to $100,000, but ultimately sold for $300,000.
Record
Although we are talking about considerable amounts, the garments do not break any records with their yield. In September this year, someone already paid $1.1 million for the iconic sweater with the black sheep. Diana’s personal letters fetched a lot less, but still a significant amount: in total they sold for £161,000, with the most expensive for £31,000. In it, Lady Di wrote that she hoped that 1997 would be an easier year “for all of us”. We all know how sad that ended…
