This horror film is so scary that audiences left the theater crying

Horror movies are supposed to be scary, but sometimes they can go a little too far. Horror comedy The Substance is apparently so gross that people left the cinema in tears!

The Substance is a bit too gross

Last Wednesday, a preview of the new film The Substance was shown in the Forum Groningen cultural centre. This evening of watching films ended a lot more intensely than expected for many visitors. A thirty-year-old visitor fainted during the film. In addition, according to the AD, approximately ten percent of the filmgoers fled the theatre in tears. A spokesperson told the AD that the film is “uncompromising and bloody”. The spokesperson explained that people often come to a preview without knowing exactly what kind of film they are going to see. This can lead to strong reactions when it turns out to be a dirty horror film. “We all got lyrical reactions back. But a few people thought it really went a few steps too far.”

The film The Substance is about actress Elizabeth Sparkle, played by Demi Moore. In the film, the actress struggles with the fact that she is getting older and seizes the opportunity to become young again when it is offered to her. This had unexpected and dark consequences that neither Elizabeth nor the film viewers in Groningen saw coming. The film will be in cinemas from 19 September.

The Substance is not the first ‘too gory’ horror

It is not the first time that a horror film is labelled as too dirty. There are several titles that have previously received a lot of hype from horror fans because the film would have caused a lot of drama during previews. A recent example of this is the film Terrifier 2. In this film, filmgoers would also have fainted during the film. Vomiting or crying also occurred here. Terrifier 2 is therefore certainly not recommended for filmgoers who get nauseous quickly.

But can a horror film really be too gross? Of course, that depends on the viewer. What goes too far for one person may be very mild for another. Our tip: do your research before going to a film. Check online if there are specific trigger warnings to take into account. That way you avoid having to flee a cinema!
