This is how small rituals make your day special

Changing your daily routine is easier said than done. Still, it can be worth it. Adding a daily ritual to your routine can make your day feel a lot more special. This is how you can do this.

Rituals in your family or relationship

Having small rituals with your family or partner can be very good for your bond. Adding your own ritual is very personal and feels like something that is just for you together. The ritual does not have to be extensive at all. For example, you can add a tradition to your dinner. Nice examples are always expressing gratitude for something before you eat, or toasting before you eat. For example, a ritual for couples could be that you always kiss each other before you leave each other for the day. A date night can also be a ritual. For example, always go to the same restaurant or to the restaurant where your first date took place.

The difference between rituals and routines

Rituals and routines have something in common. Namely that you always do it as standard. The difference is in the meaning. You perform a routine because it has to be done, a ritual has a personal meaning. You do something a certain way because it feels good to you. For example, it can be a ritual to always brush your teeth first and then take a shower. If this adds value to your day, then it is a ritual.

How to implement a ritual into your day

Adding a new step to your daily routine may sound like a lot of work. But of course that is not what a ritual should be. It is something you do because it is meaningful to you. Take a good look at your current daily routine and think about the things you do as standard and why you do them. Do you do it because it is useful, or because it is nice. Is that second your answer? Then it is actually a ritual. To really make something a ritual, you have to repeat it consistently. This way it becomes more and more meaningful each time you do it. And remember that rituals can change. They move with you and your life. If they no longer fit into your life, there is room for change.
