In these cities you can find the cheapest student rooms

The new school year will start very soon, which means that many students are still looking for a new room. In the Netherlands, of course, there are cities where prices are skyrocketing, but there are also places where you can rent a nice place for a reasonable price. In which cities are the cheapest student rooms? Read on quickly.

Students in rooms

In the academic year of 2022-2023, the Netherlands had approximately 754,500 dual and full-time students. Of these, 634,000 have Dutch nationality or have completed a Dutch prior education. Just under 120,000 students have non-Dutch nationality and no Dutch prior education. Approximately half of all these students lived away from home this school year (398,000 to be precise). The number of students living away from home has increased by 9 percent, according to the National Student Housing Monitor. This increase is due to the growing number of international students, who of course all live away from home.

Student room prices

In total, there are quite a few students who need a student room. It all depends on where you study, but finding a room is not always that easy. Especially not when there is also a huge price tag attached to it. The current prices are monitored by the well-known rental platform Kamernet, which has analyzed the rental prices based on more than 34,000 rooms. Of those rooms, more than 52 percent were offered furnished, 35 percent unfurnished and more than 12 percent have carpeting (yay).

Most expensive and cheapest cities

You might have expected it, but students in Amsterdam are the ones who get screwed. The average price of a student room in the Dutch capital is 961 euros per month. If you study in Wageningen, you’re in luck. Rooms there cost an average of ‘only’ 354 euros per month.
