‘After all their years together, this was of course a huge slap in the face.’
Every relationship has its ups and downs, even when it seems perfect on the outside. Did you know that even William and Kate had an on-again, off-again relationship for a long time? Robert Jobson’s upcoming book Catherine, The Princess of Wales will feature some extraordinary revelations about this tumultuous period in their lives.
Break-up
Prince William and Princess Kate met at St Andrews University in Scotland. What followed was a budding romance that eventually led to a royal wedding, but things could have gone very differently.
It was already known that the two were not always steady in the beginning of their relationship. But now it even turns out that William once broke up with his (then) girlfriend… over the phone! According to royal expert Jobson, the two once had an “emotionally charged thirty-minute phone conversation”, in which the prince indicated that he wanted to go his own way. Not really mature to do that over the phone, Wills.
The conversation
Jobson claims the phone call took place in 2007, shortly after William had cancelled his New Year’s Eve plans with Kate. “Out of the blue, William suggested they split. He felt they needed ‘a bit of space’ to ‘find their own path,'” the expert writes.
According to him, the two were clearly not on the same page in terms of their expectations. “William admitted that he found it difficult to commit to marriage, and that left Catherine feeling sad and lost. After all their years together, this was obviously a huge slap in the face,” Jobson said. “She was also disappointed that William decided to do this over the phone, rather than face to face.”
Flashing light relationship
“This wasn’t the first time William had broken up with Kate, but it felt more final this time,” Jobson continued. According to him, the couple had also briefly split three years earlier, something William attributed to their “immaturity” at the time.
The break-up in 2007, on the other hand, would have had more to do with Wills’ commitment issues. And that while there were already speculations about an upcoming royal wedding. But that was still a while away, because William and Kate only got married three years later. All’s well that ends well, we might say.
