It is better not to use these sunscreens

With these (mega) hot summer days, applying sunscreen is super important. You want to keep your skin safe from the bright rays of the sun, so it is smart to apply plenty of sunscreen during the day. But which sunscreen is actually best to use? Or better yet, which one should you leave on the store shelf? Read more soon.

Consumers Association research

The choice is huge when it comes to sunscreens. Stores are full of them, so choosing which sunscreen to go for can sometimes be difficult. Fortunately, the Consumers’ Association conducts a survey every year into the best and worst sunscreens. In this research they look at protection, ease of use, ingredients and sustainability. This research naturally revealed the best SPFs, but also the less good creams.

Which sunscreen not to use?

The tested products came onto the market at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 and are therefore actually still quite ‘new’. A comparison of thirty-eight sunscreens for the body and thirteen for the face can now be found via the consumer association. Not bad! Of those thirteen newly tested products, three are not recommended. Here they are:

  • Nivea Sun Kids Ultra Protect and Play
  • Kruidvat Solait Sunmilk
  • Cien Sun Kids Sun Protect Cream from Lidl

Why?

The Consumers’ Association also gives a reason why these three SPFs are not recommended. The claims they make for all three products are incorrect. For example, all three claim to contain SPF 50, but the research shows that Nivea offers SPF 41.3, Kruidvat SPF 32.7 and Cien SPF 36. So the protection value is false! It is a good thing that these types of products are tested, as there can be nasty consequences from sunburn and skin damage.

Have you already purchased these products? You can of course still use the SPF, but make sure you check carefully for burning and simply apply it more often.

Best sunscreen

Now that you know what you shouldn’t buy, it might be nice to know which SPF you should buy. The Consumers’ Association also conducts research every year into the best sunscreen and Action’s cheap ointment has emerged as the winner. This SPF – Zenova’s SPF30 sun milk – has been awarded three important titles: Best Buy, Best of Test and Green Choice.
