Fact or fable: meditation helps your sex life

Lori Brotto, a Canadian psychologist whose research appeared in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, noted that women who meditate have a better sex life than women who don’t. Maybe it is an option to roll out that yoga mat again?

Meditation and mindfulness

Several psychologists agree with the research. They say that studies in sexology prove that mindfulness and meditation have positive effects on our sexuality, especially in women. With mindfulness we practice accepting yourself, becoming aware of life and paying attention to the here and now. This awareness helps in various aspects of life, and so does the relationships you maintain. It therefore has a positive influence on women’s sexuality and relationship experience.

Often distracted

We often make the ‘mistake’ of being too concerned with things that are beyond our control. We often and quickly get distracted by other things going on in our heads, which makes us more likely to have difficulty living in the here and now. This means you cannot concentrate properly or we are less able to express the emotions we feel. Meditation and mindfulness help you work on this, so that you can reflect on yourself and appreciate things around you more. Several studies show that women who meditate become more physically aroused and can achieve better orgasms than women who do not meditate. Meditation can also be important for people with sexual problems, such as erectile dysfunction or female arousal problems. Not only that, but it can also make you much more confident, which automatically makes you more attractive. You will be better able to indicate your boundaries and put your negative emotions aside. Mindfulness and meditation are intended to create more awareness, so that you will accept yourself more, become more aware of life and pay more attention to the here and now.
