1. Winter – Ali Smith
“Winter” is the second book in Ali Smith’s seasonal quartet, which also has “Fall,” “Spring,” and “Summer” in the series. The story revolves around the lives of two main characters: Sophia Cleves, an older businesswoman, and Lux, a young woman who lives in a park. The two women seemingly have little in common, but a series of unexpected events bring them together in Sophia’s house during the Christmas season.
2. The Name of the Wind – Patrick Rothfuss
If you like epic fantasy, this book is a must-read. The book tells the story of Kvothe, a talented magician and musician. On his path to adulthood, Kvothe goes through several challenges, including attending a magical college called the University, where he develops his skills in music, magic, and other arts. He is confronted with love, friendship and conflict as he tries to understand his own mysterious powers.
3. A Day in December – by Josie Silver
This is a heart-warming romance novel set around the Christmas period. The story is about Laurie and Jack, two people whose paths cross at a decisive moment. The meeting takes place one day in December when Laurie sees a young man on the street from a bus and their eyes meet. Even though she can’t jump off the bus to meet him, he remains in her thoughts.
4. Northern Lights Trilogy – Philip Pullman
Consisting of “The Golden Compass”, “The Subtle Knife” and “The Amber Viewer”, this trilogy is a mix of fantasy, adventure and philosophy. Perfect for long winter evenings.
5. Winter in Madrid – CJ Sansom
The story follows Harry Brett, a former British soldier, who is sent to Madrid in 1940 after the Spanish Civil War. He is assigned to keep an eye on an old friend, Sandy Forsyth. Sandy appears to be involved in shady political affairs and has connections to both the British and Spanish secret services.
6. The Snowman – Jo Nesbø
This is an exciting thriller set in Norway during winter. The story revolves around Inspector Harry Hole who tries to solve a mysterious case involving a missing woman and a terrifying snowman.
7. Winter Night – Suzanne Vermeer
If you like light, suspenseful thrillers, Suzanne Vermeer is a good choice. “Winternacht” tells the story of psychologist Karin ter Duin who, at the age of thirty-five, is told that she has been adopted. Her biological father is dying and wants to see her one more time, so Karin leaves for the Canadian city of Ottawa with her deaf son Sam. However, on the day of arrival, no one has time for her. Everyone is in an uproar because a girl from The Glebe, the neighborhood where her family lives, is missing. Five-year-old Liv Tremblay was walking with her parents and brother in a nearby nature park when she disappeared in a moment of inattention. Before she knows it, Karin becomes involved in the case. 8. The Girl on the Train – Paula Hawkins
This psychological thriller is perfect for long evenings. The story follows the lives of three women whose lives become intertwined in ways you don’t see coming.
