You must try this snack in this Dutch city

We Dutch love snacks and we understand that. The Netherlands has so many tasty snacks, such as bitterbal, frikandel, poffertjes, herring and oliebollen. Every city or province has its signature snack. Read here which snack you should try where in the Netherlands.

Arnhem girls

The Arnhem girls are oval hard-baked cookies made from yeast dough, which are generously sprinkled with sugar. The cookies were first baked in 1829. It is Arnhem’s pride and we understand why. You can get the real original cookies at Bakker Hilvers. Very tasty and worth a try.

Sausage roll

We all know them either because you get them at the supermarket or through Roy Donders, the sausage rolls. If you are in Brabant, you should not leave the province without enjoying a warm and fresh sausage roll.

Bossche bol

The Bossche bol also comes from Brabant, namely from Den Bosch. You probably know these from your local bakery, but the Bossche bulbs from Jan de Groot pastry shop are next level. Definitely worth a pit stop!

pie of Limburg

Another one that we all know, but nowhere tastes better than on the terrace of a Limburg bakery. Do you want to taste the best of 2023? Then visit bakery Vries in Weert.

Zeeland bolus

The Zeeland bolus is a sweet sugared roll from the province of Zeeland. Do you take a bag of boluses with you to the office or school? Then you have to share anyway. Don’t you know it? You do not know what you are missing.

The Spakenburg heart

The delicacy from Spakenburg is a kind of butter cake that is not fully baked, with a glaze of egg white and icing sugar. The Spakenburgs Hart is usually eaten on festive occasions, such as a birthday. We believe that every day is a party, including when we are in Spakenburg. Definitely try it or take it with you when you are in Spakenburg.

The stroopwafel

When you think of Gouda, you probably think of cheese, but it is also the city of the stroopwafel. The Stroopwafel originated in Gouda. In 1810, the first Stroopwafel was made from leftover dough and cookie crumbs with syrup in between, by baker Kamphuisen. A warm stroopwafel is always a good idea and so also in Gouda.

The Orange Cake

Friesland knows what tasty snacks are. They have sugar bread, dribble cakes, rye bread, keallepoaten and Fryske duumpkes, but also the orange cake. The orange cake traditionally consists of a plate-shaped cake with snippets of orange peel, topped with pink icing and a cream. Put this on your list if you go to Friesland.

Egg ball

One is a big fan and the other less so. We are talking about the Groningen snack, the egg ball. The egg ball consists of a whole or half hard-boiled and peeled egg in ragout. The ball is breaded and then fried. Are you on the Grote Markt in Groningen? Then definitely try an egg ball.
