Some wear heels every day, others only on a special occasion. Whether you wear heels every day or very rarely, there are a few things to know if you decide to wear heels. Because is walking in heels actually good for your feet and legs? We looked into it for you.
Walking in heels
You hate it or you love it, but walking in heels just looks nice. It completes your outfit and makes you feel sexy. But unfortunately we disappoint you: walking in heels is not very healthy. Your feet, but also the rest of your body, is not happy with this. Walking in heels all day is also very tiring. Even if you are not used to anything else, your body is not very happy with this.
Other body positions
When you wear heels, you actually change your entire posture. When you wear heels, the distance between your toe and heel becomes shorter, giving you less support while standing and walking. There is also a lot of pressure on your foot, which eventually becomes painful and can even cause hammertoes. But blisters, ingrown toenails and bunions are also more likely to occur in people who wear heels. And your knees? They are also not happy when you wear heels. Pressure is placed on the middle part of your knees, which affects your knee joint. This causes pain, your calf muscles become shorter, causing damage to your muscles and causing osteoarthritis. And one more thing: you are also more likely to develop varicose veins. We don’t want that.
What now?
As you can see, there is quite a list of complaints that arise from wearing heels. But does that also mean we should never wear heels again? Help! Don’t worry, you can still wear heels. There are a few things you can do to make it less stressful for your body:
Always buy shoes in the right size. A shoe that is too small is of course not good for your feet anyway, but heels that pinch are a disaster for your feet.
If you want to wear heels, wear a block heel or a wedge heel. These give just a little more support to your feet.
Don’t wear heels when you go shopping. Or better said, match your shoes to the activity you are doing.
If you regularly wear heels, it is good to train your calf muscles occasionally.
To give your feet extra support, choose special insoles that you put in your heels.
Have you worn heels for a day? Then walk barefoot when you are at home so that your feet can recover.
