Avoid it is!
To create a more youthful appearance, you can achieve a lot with hair styling and makeup – but it can also go the other way. Hairstylists Ghanima Abdullah and Lauren Udoh explain which hair mistakes can make you look older.
1. Dye thinning hair dark
As we get older, our hair becomes thinner. Although some women tend to dye their locks darker, according to Abdullah it is better not to do this. “Dark colors actually emphasize the visible scalp more. Try light brown with blonde highlights instead.”
2. Frequent straightening or curling
Another mistake that is often made is over-styling the hair with a straightener or curling iron. “This can make the hair look stringy and lifeless and can accentuate any wrinkles or lines on the face,” explains Udoh.
3. Frequently use heavy styling products
To give thin hair more volume, many women choose to use heavy styling products such as thick gels and mousses. “These products can weigh the hair down and make it look greasy,” says Udoh. “It’s important to find lighter products that help add volume and body to the hair without weighing it down,” she explains. “Dry shampoo is a good example of this.” If you want to combat dry and frizzy hair, it is best to use a leave-in conditioner, according to Abdullah.
4. Having very long or very short hair
As you get older and your hair thins, the length of your locks can make a big difference in how old or young you look. “If your hair is thinning, try to keep the length between shoulder and ear length,” Abdullah advises. “If it’s too long it looks even thinner, making you look older. Hair that is too short can put too much focus on the visible scalp.”
