William and Kate in the dust over edited photo

The Waleses are responding to the fuss for the first time.

We already wrote this morning about the edited photo of Princess Kate, which was withdrawn by various news agencies. It now seems that Kensington Palace has learned from the fuss that their silence can cause, because they are sharing a sincere apology on social media.

Photoshop blunders

Although a good portion of the speculation previously continued to circulate on social media, it turned out that there was so much going on with Kate’s Mother’s Day photo that major press agencies also withdrew the photo. And that of course caused quite a stir. Because why would Kensington Palace release such an obviously edited snapshot of the Wales family?

Reportedly, the main element causing problems was ‘an inconsistency in the position of Princess Charlotte’s left hand’. Other keen viewers have also spotted more parts of the photo that appear to be incorrect. For example, royalty expert Chris Ship shares a small collage on X (formerly Twitter):

I’ve never been much of a conspiracy theorist but if @AP @AFP @Reuters & other picture agencies are concerned enough to remove it and ask clients to delete it, there are serious questions for Kensington Palace – which was the source of the photo.

Apologies

Although the British generally cling to their motto never complain, never explain, it now appears that they have repented. They share sincere apologies for this mistake via the Instagram Stories on the official account of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

“Like many amateur photographers, I occasionally experiment with edits,” they begin their message. “I wanted to apologize for any confusion the family photo we shared yesterday may have caused.”

“I hope everyone who celebrates had a very happy Mother’s Day,” they conclude their message on a positive note. The signature is just the letter C, for Catherine.

In short: nothing to worry about, guys, I just messed up in Photoshop – with kind regards from Kate.

Criticism

It is the first time that Wales have responded so directly to all the fuss surrounding Princess Kate’s absence. And let’s be honest: that was necessary. After more than two months out of the spotlight and such an obviously edited snapshot, Kensington Palace saw the wave of criticism growing.

Now it is hoped that this statement will finally calm people down. We are having a hard time…
