The reality show is a popular genre on TV. There are many different shows where producers never seem to run out of ideas. Each show is a variation on the previous one, think of Ex on the Beach, Temptation Island and Love Island. There is now a queer version of the latter: I kissed a girl. This is why you’ll want to watch it.
The series
I Kissed a Girl is a variant of Love Island, the reality series where you follow a number of young singles who are looking for true love during their stay on a fairytale island, while cameras film them day and night. To stay on the island as long as possible, singles must form couples. This is also the case with this series, the only difference is that the candidates are now all queer ladies. Ten singles in their twenties are sent to a luxury villa and linked together. As the days pass, new candidates arrive and couples are formed again. If this doesn’t happen quickly enough, someone has to leave.
Differences between Love Island and I Kissed a Girl
Although it may seem very similar, there are also differences between the two series. Besides the fact that no hetero couples are formed, the way in which they interact with each other is also refreshing. In Love Island we see men and women who drink too much alcohol and hit on each other, verbally abuse and dump each other. In I Kissed a Girl this is different and much more loving. You see their insecurities, joy to belong somewhere in a group and women who have sometimes just come out of the closet and are looking for love. They are open and honest about their feelings. This makes it nice to watch.
Pleasure
What is also striking is that it is more like a holiday than a competition. When the candidates aren’t having deep conversations or loving kisses, they’re talking about their experiences as queer women and, above all, having a lot of fun. They also built real friendships. Something you often see happening in the close-knit queer community.
