If you have noticed that you have had difficulty staying awake during the day lately, then you are certainly not the only one. Because of winter time, our biological clock and colder temperatures, our body simply needs a little more sleep. You might think an extra cup of coffee (or three) would do the trick, but we have a solution that’s even better: take a nap!

Why do you need to take a nap?
Around noon our energy level for the day has dropped considerably. Especially when we have to deal with school or work, it takes a lot of energy in the morning, which causes a dip in the afternoon (often after lunch). You think a cup of coffee or a snack with some sugar will help. But it’s actually much better to just give in to your body: you just need a power nap. We’ll explain why.
Power naps for the win
Why is it better to get a short beauty sleep in the middle of the day? Sleep scientist and Harvard lecturer Dr Rebecca Robins explains. ‘A power nap refers to a very short period of sleep of about 20 minutes and no longer than 30 minutes. Sometimes 10 minutes is even enough,” says Robins. ‘The key is to stay in the lighter stages of sleep, resulting in an immediate boost of energy and alertness.’
Advantages
Apparently taking a short nap has many benefits. This way you naturally feel more rested and your mood is also a lot better. You will feel better in the long term and your creativity will flow in. Not to forget that you will also be more enjoyable for the people around you.
Best time for a nap
According to Dr Rebecca Robins, the best time to take a power nap is between 1pm and 3pm. Make sure you don’t sleep longer than 30 minutes, otherwise you run the risk of disrupting your normal sleep rhythm. In any case, listen to your own body. If you need a little sleep, give it to yourself, provided that is possible in your situation of course.
