Queen Margrethe of Denmark (83) is doing her duty one last time! In a few days, on January 14th, the monarch will step down from office after 52 years. Her son Prince Frederik (55) and his wife Princess Mary (51) will take the throne after her. The whole thing is made official with a ceremonial act. Before the big day, Margrethe presented herself as the reigning queen one last time!
Ten days before her abdication, Margrethe drove through Copenhagen beaming in a golden horse-drawn carriage. Despite the freezing temperatures, many thousands of fans came – they waved and cheered for the 83-year-old. At Christiansborg Palace, she welcomed officers and representatives of important national and royally-sponsored organizations for the last time as queen. After five hours, Margrethe went back home.
In recent years, Margrethe has repeatedly struggled with health problems. Nevertheless, her abdication came very suddenly. “The queen’s abdication comes as a surprise not only to me, but to all other experts as well. Nobody predicted this,” explained nobility expert Jürgen Worlitz Glamial.
