People on TikTok walk backwards? This is why

We’re moving forward, right? Well, if it’s up to TikTok, we’ll soon be walking backwards a lot. This would be very good for our health. But why exactly? We explain.

Walking backwards

You may have seen it before on TikTok: people walking backwards on the treadmill. This sounds quite random, but there is actually a reason behind it! Walking backwards is said to be very good for our health. For this reason, many people on TikTok are trying out the new trend. Who knows, you might soon spot someone at the gym standing backwards on the treadmill.

The advantages

So walking backwards is good for us, but why exactly. First of all, walking backwards is good because it uses your muscles in a different way. Your thighs are trained the most this way. If you like to train your legs in the gym, walking backwards is certainly a nice addition to your leg day, it is something different than squats, for example. In addition, walking backwards is good for your balance and coordination. You are more aware of your movement as you perform a movement that feels a bit unnatural. People on TikTok also claim that walking backwards can be very beneficial if you suffer from pain in your knees. This trains the muscles that can provide your knees with more support. As a final added bonus, it is also good for your brain. You have to think quite a bit about how to perform this movement. You need to be active with the placement of your feet and your balance. So you not only give your body a workout, but also your brain.

This is how you do it

The best way to try this workout is on a treadmill. Stand backwards on the treadmill and set it to a low speed. You can stick to the treadmill at first as you become comfortable with the movement. Start with short distances and/or times. For example, walk backwards for five minutes for the rest of your workout. Then slowly build up to ten minutes. People at the gym may look at you a little funny, but the results are definitely worth it!
