Little princes grow up!
Yes: it is already another next-gen royal’s birthday. Or uh, almost my birthday, sorry. Next Sunday, Norwegian Prince Sverre Magnus will turn eighteen years old, and that should be celebrated. As the younger son of Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit, a grand gala (like that for sister Ingrid Alexandra) is not an option, but a beautiful new portrait of the young prince is possible.
Adult prince
After his father and big sister, Prince Sverre Magnus is third in line to the Norwegian throne, so a future as king is most likely not in the cards for the (currently) seventeen-year-old prince.
Father Haakon shared earlier this year that his son must find ‘his own way’. “It is Ingrid who will take over the role. Magnus will probably be involved in some stuff, but I think he probably won’t have an official role or a full-time position. That’s not the plan. So he has to find something he wants to do in life.”
Just like our Prince Constantijn, who as the monarch’s brother works as an entrepreneur and independent advisor, Sverre Magnus will be able to choose his own path.
Portrait photo
Because he is not a direct heir to the throne, Sverre Magnus’ birthday is being celebrated with significantly less fanfare this week. Today the Norwegian court shared a brand new portrait photo of the teenage prince. Because well, the last official snapshot came from 2018 and the prince has grown and changed a lot since then. Let’s face it: this snapshot of thirteen-year-old Sverre is really funny…

…but does not do justice to the young adult prince of today.

Family party
While his sister was allowed to throw a grand gala party, Sverre must continue this weekend with a festive birthday meal, hosted by grandparents King Harald and Queen Sonja. His grandmother will reportedly give a speech there for her adult grandson. Of course, his parents and sister are present, as are Aunt Märtha Louise and Great Aunt Princess Astrid.
Moreover, this is also the perfect moment for the young prince to show himself at his noblest, and so various representatives of youth organizations will also be present, just like at fellow prince Christian’s eighteenth birthday earlier this year. This way it will still be a party with quite a bit of regal allure.
