The couple maintains a number of Danish traditions.
They have only just settled in as the brand new royal couple of Denmark, but there is no real time for King Frederik and Queen Mary to relax on the throne. They will soon leave on their first official tour at home and abroad!
Royal visit
State visits, official trips, and series of meetings with your fellow heads of state: it’s all part of being a monarch. It is tradition that as a new monarch you first pay an official visit to your senior colleagues. Only when that has happened can people come to you for coffee.
To start off right, the Danske Kongehus has now announced not just one visit, but a whole series. Yes: Frederik and Mary are going on tour!
Danish tour
For example, the court announced in an official message that the couple will make a first set of state visits to Sweden and Norway next summer. It has long been customary for Scandinavian monarchs to make such a first state visit to their neighbors, and Their Royal Highnesses are now honoring that tradition.
For example, the website of the Danish monarchy states that the two will be in Sweden on May 6 and 7, and the journey will continue to Norway on May 14 and 15. After these first two state visits, the royal couple will make their appearance in the Faroe Islands and Greenland in June and July – although the dates have not yet been completely determined.

Royal cruise
While the average royal simply flies or drives to their destination, the Danes approach it differently: they leave by ship! As we often see during Scandinavian state visits, Frederik and Mary also appear to be big fans of a small cruise along the Northern European coast. For example, the court writes on Instagram: “The Royal Yacht Dannebrog already functions as a residence during the journey.”
It is well known that Frederick’s mother, Queen Margrethe, was also a big fan of state visits by ship. Then she didn’t have to sleep in some strange palace, but she could simply return to her own bed in her own cabin at the end of the day. So easy!
