King Charles is held hostage in the new book from Camilla’s book club

A striking choice by the Queen…

Queen Camilla has chosen the book The Lord’s Day by Michael Dobbs to read with her own book club. And that is a striking choice: in the book none other than her own husband Charles is taken hostage. Uhm… what do you mean by this, Camilla?

Reading Room

In 2021, Camilla founded her book club, The Queen’s Reading Room. With this charity she wants to encourage reading and help more people discover great books. Her Majesty chooses four of her favorite books every quarter and invites everyone to read these books too.

And of course, with a new year comes new recommendations. For the thirteenth season of her book club, Camilla chose, among other things, a rather striking thriller, which must be very close to home for her.

The Lord’s Day

One of the recommended books, The Lord’s Day, has none other than her own husband Charles in the leading role. In this book, a security breach leaves Charles held hostage along with the late Queen Elizabeth during the State Opening of Parliament.

Just to be clear: the book is of course complete fiction. However, it did cause quite a stir during its publication in 2007. In retrospect, this turns out to be unnecessary, as the book is a favorite even in royal circles!

Author Michael Dobbs tells The Telegraph how happy he is with Camilla’s choice: “It really shows how inclusive and open-minded she is. This is not a fussy and traditional queen, but someone who has her eyes on the modern world.”

Reading Room Podcast

The Reading Room started during the pandemic as a book club on Instagram, which Camilla set up specifically for literature lovers. This turned out to be a success, and at the end of last year the Queen even announced a matching podcast!

In an excerpt from the podcast you can hear how Camilla talks about her own love for books. Which book does she prefer to read to her grandchildren? Harry Potter! She says she is ‘hopeless’ at imitating voices while reading, but adds with a laugh: “My husband is great at that, he can imitate all voices.” King Charles imitating Harry Potter voices? We secretly want to hear that!
